Stourbridge Women manager Andy Fisher has praised his side’s efforts in a historic campaign for the Glassgirls as the club prepares for its first FA WNL Plate final.
The Glassgirls’ impressive season so far sees the club sit top of the pile in the National League Division One Midlands, seven points clear of Doncaster Belles albeit with one more game played.
Andy Fisher’s side have picked up 13 wins from 16 outings, losing just once with their dominance in the league lending to a league-high of 71 goals, almost double that of any of their league rivals.
Such dominance follows on from the club’s championship-winning season last year, securing promotion to the fourth tier with 21 wins from 22 games.
Stourbridge have continued their performances in cup competitions too, reaching the FA WNL Plate final at the first time of asking. All teams from the third and fourth tiers of women’s football enter the competition, with Stourbridge preparing to take on Division One North side Leeds United at Damson Park.
Fisher hopes his side can make the most of their momentum in the league but stresses the importance of enjoying the occasion.
He said: “It’s going to be a real tough game for us, they’re a massive club as we know so we’re just going to enjoy the Stourbridge v Leeds at Solihull Moors, hopefully get a big crowd and if we can come away with some silverware then great and that will help with our momentum with hopefully going on to be successful in the league and potentially the county cup.
“There’s still loads to do, ultimately in this position we’re talking about cup finals and semi finals and leagues but none of it’s won. We’ve still got lots to do and again, that’s going back to that complacency thing but we’re just enjoying the journey and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Victory would see the Glassgirls pick up their third trophy in the last two seasons, picking up the domestic double last campaign with league and Premier Division League Cup success. The FA WNL Plate is the first of three pieces of silverware up for grabs, with the Birmingham FA Women’s County Cup also on the line.
The Stourbridge manager has reinforced the need to ward off any complacency ahead of the final run-in with eight games still left to be played.
Fisher added: “A point’s a point in this league and that’s important to say and the girls have got to realise that so we do as a management group really do focus on that: staying humble, don’t get complacent, stay focused, each game has its own challenges.
“You can’t think ahead, you’ve just got to keep focusing on the game that’s in hand, whether that be the league or cup, he’s your challenge, this is your opposition - three points is needed or a cup win is needed and that’s it.”
Stourbridge take on Leeds United in the FA WNL Plate final on Sunday 26 March, kick-off 3:30pm at Damson Park.
